Atmel Introduces an Innovative USB Full-Speed Secure Microcontroller
A Highly Secured Solution Targeted for PC-based e-Commerce Applications
ROUSSET, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 2002--Atmel®
Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML - news), announced today that it is sampling the
production release of AT90SC6464C-USB, an AVR®-based secure Flash
microcontroller. The main innovation of the AT90SC6464C-USB is that
its USB Full-Speed interface is combined with Atmel's AVR 8/16-bit
RISC Core, powerful cryptography capabilities and a very high level of
security. Its USB V1.1 Full Speed interface (12Mbps) gives it a
direct high-speed connection to any PC or Internet appliance using
e-Token or Smart Card support. This innovative secure microcontroller
is a powerful and cost effective solution for a wide range of Internet
secure access and E-commerce applications. Examples include electronic
signature, user authentication, transfers of large amounts of secure
data, high-security financial transactions and access keys for secure
software.
Herve Roche, Atmel's marketing manager for Internet Transaction
Smart Card ICs, commented, "An embedded USB Full-Speed interface on a
secure microcontroller is an ideal mean to solve the major concerns of
the security in the PC world with a cost effective solution. Using
e-Token technology, ATMEL brings a highly secured and mono-chip
solution. Using this Smart Card technology, a PC and smart card may
now use the same communication protocol. It is no longer necessary to
install a traditional SC reader on the PC, only a low cost connector.
The AT90SC6464C-USB has a dual USB/ISO 7816 external interface that is
automatically configured on insertion into a reader. In this way, it
remains compatible with the established ISO 7816 infrastructure, while
opening up all the possibilities of USB interfacing. Transaction times
are improved thanks to the high data transfer rate over the USB Full
Speed."
The AT90SC6464C-USB is built around Atmel's innovative AVR 8-bit
RISC processor, with 64K Bytes of on-chip Flash memory and 64K Bytes
of EEPROM. Flash program memory gives unrivaled flexibility for new
applications with the ability to load or upgrade application code
during the production run with no delay. The large EEPROM data memory
enables the device to store enough secure data for complex
transactions. Additionally, the AT90SC6464C-USB includes all the
security features already built into the AT90SC series, in particular
a 16-bit RISC crypto-processor for efficient hardware accelerated
execution of highest-level encryption algorithms.
Since April 2002, the AT90SC6464C-USB is available in engineering
samples. Production quantities will be available at a price of US
$4.50 in quantities of 200,000 units.
